Easter in Barcelona – 2009

Easter is fast approaching; this Easter falls on Sunday April 12th, with public holidays on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday.

In fact Catalonia is out of sync with most of the rest of Spain, which takes Maundy Thursday as a holiday instead of Easter Monday. However, some of the autonomous communities take both Maundy Thursday AND Easter Monday as holidays – the Balearic Islands, Navarra, the Basque Country and Valencia – making a good five-day break.

One of the specialities of this time are doughnuts made drom a dense dough called “bunyols” (or “brunyols” in the Ampurdan), which fried before being flavoured with aniseed liqueur and coated with sugar.

Many restaurants will be open over the Easter period, especially those located in the tourist zones. However, you should check the opening times of museums and other attractions to save a wasted trip – the best option is to simply search the web as most publish their opening times online.
