Review: Patagonia Beef & Wine
There are a number of Argentinean restaurants in Barcelona, but checking online I found some very positive online reviews of Patagonia Beef & Wine, with the quality of its steaks universally praised – at least one reviewer said it was the best steak ever – and the staff efficient and polite.
Monday night is never the best night to go to a restaurant, but arriving close to 9:30 there were several full tables. We hadn’t booked and so were taken straight through to a table for two in the smoking area for which we’d asked. The restaurant is cleanly decorated, and some of the best dining chairs I can remember sitting on recently. We were soon shown the menu – available in Castilian, Catalan and English, and the waiters seemed to be Argentinean and Catalan and all spoke English. The menu isn’t particularly comprehensive, which is always a good thing – if more restaurants would realise that focusing on a few dishes are doing them excellently is the way to go.
Ordering the meal we both started with a selection of 4 different empañadas – pastries filled with corn, beef, cheese and ham. I ordered a medium rare fillet steak with vegetables while my other half opted for chicken breast and baked potato with cheese. Soon we were brought a bottle of the house wine and water and three types of bread with condiments, which were all good.
The starter soon arrived, which were delicious, although perhaps the filling was on the light side and the wine was good. €14 for a house wine in Spain is pretty hot, but it was imported from Argentina along with everything else and certainly no complaint about it. After clearing away our plates from the first course the main course arrived. My vegetables turned out to be red pepper and asparagus with a grill half potato. The steak was pretty good, although I’d hesitate to say it was the best I’ve ever had.
For dessert we shared a tiramisu, which is bizarrely described as Italian and Argentinean. It was good although light on alcohol. The bill was €71 for the 2 of us.
Overall a good restaurant, with some of the best staff I can remember. All were polite without being over friendly like you find in many places, discrete and efficient. If you like steak then you should definitely check this place out.
