Tie up with BA seen as best option for Iberia’s survival
Iberia’s €16.4m third-quarter losses saw the majority of the Spanish press in favour of a tie-up with British Airways as the best option for survival.
“It is the best way to reduce operating costs but we are going to see problems from the trade unions as the company seeks to cut employees, something that is inevitable in any merger”, according to Robert Tornabell of Barcelona’s ESADE business school.
BA and Iberia have both lost out to the no frills airlines, including Easyjet, Ryanair and Jet2, but Iberia has lost out to the high speed train on the popular Barcelona-Madrid shuttle service.
