The real cost of flying Ryanair

Earlier in the week I booked a return flight from Girona-Costa Brava airport to Liverpool for a few days just before Easter. Ryanair being Ryanair, the headline prices were low, with additional costs stacked on top.

The outbound flight costs nothing according to the information first presented to me, but afterwards shows costs for taxes and fees of 19.06 Euros. Likewise, the return flight is shown at 39.99 Euros, but the taxes and fees take that up to 61.96 Euros, a total of 81.02 Euros for the return trip.

But even that turns out not to be the whole truth.

First of all they want to charge me 4.50 Euros for boarding the plane first, plus 14.50 Euros for insurance, both of which I declined, but since I’m not sure if I’ll be able to check in online on the way back I chose to check in at the airports for an additional 10 Euros, a total of 91.02 Euros. I also elected to go hand luggage only, avoiding another Ryanair stealth charge.

And finally, after I though I’d finished with the booking, I was asked to enter my Travel Document Details – compulsory due to security these days. It was simply a matter of my passport, which luckily I had to hand, although you can enter this data later.
