British airlines poorly rated in Which? survey [The Guardian]

Seven of the eight worst airlines in a Which? survey were British according to an article in The Guardian. Top of the list for short haul flights was Swiss Airlines, while the worst offenders were Thomas Cook Airlines. Other poorly performing British carriers were Jet2.com, Easyjet, BMI Baby and Monarch Airlines, and Ireland’s Ryanair received a poor rating for its checked baggage allowance.

The article also notes:

“The survey also found that despite Ryanair’s reputation as the cheapest airline in Europe, the Irish carrier was often not the cheapest option for a family of four travelling with hold luggage. Flying London to Barcelona, for example, Easyjet was far cheaper, and deposits passengers in the city’s main airport, whereas Ryanair uses an airport actually in Girona – a 57-mile €12 (£10) bus ride away.”

It really shows how it pays to make sure you know how much you’re going to end up paying in total, including travel to and from your departure and arrival airports. While the headline price of your flight may be low – or even zero – other costs, including baggage and additional travel can really mount up, and it is a good reason to fly direct to Barcelona Airport rather than Girona.
