Barcelona cycling week

Okay, this isn’t going to impact tourists in any great way, but Barcelona Cycling Week is currently underway, from the 8th to 14th June and now in its eighth year.

Organised by the local town council, the week is aimed at convincing locals to cycle more. Already there are “Bicing” stations all over the city, where for a monthly fee you can pick up and drop off these distinctively designed municipal cycles – Barcelona has around 200,000 Bicing users who make 90,000 cycle journeys each day – but this week is designed to take that even further; according to the council, events include cycle loan, free cycle repairs and beginners courses.

In addition to Bicing, the cycle lane network is being expanded to 156 km by the end of the year, with the eventual aim of 200 km of cycle lanes. However, having used the cycle lanes in the past they can disappear suddenly with no clear idea of where to pick them up again – something that needs to be addressed to make them useful.
